Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmat Allah,
Thus far, our Summer Camp has been remarkably productive and fun-filled. Our campers enjoyed team and independent sport activities and learned about their religion. On the first day, all campers and counselors had a chance to get to know one another by sharing each other’s name, age, favorite color and activity. After our assembly, we started the campers off with a light morning jog and stretch to get them elusive for the rest of the day. Then we had a relay race, played basketball, dodge ball, learned martial arts, and had a fruit ninja competition on the XBOX Kinect. More importantly, our students learned about the 1st Pillar of Islam “ASHAHADAH” (The testimony of faith) and had to recite “Ashhadu an La ilaha ila Allah wa ashhadu ana Muhammad Rasul Allah” many times over. In addition, we learned about Tawheed (the oneness of Allah SWT), the dangers of Major Shirk and Minor Shirk, and the recitation and meaning of Surah Al-Ikhlas. Our campers learned that ALLAH SWT (GOD) is the ONE and ONLY, He is eternal (beyond the bounds of time and space), He was neither begotten nor does he beget, and there is NONE like unto Him. We spoke about how important this was, and that Allah SWT is the beginner of the universe, and nothing is before or after Him and he is completely unique, eternal and self-sufficient (Subhanahu wa ta’ala!). On the second day of camp, our campers enjoyed similar fun activities and learned about fasting for the Holy Month of Ramadan. The verse we spoke about was,
“Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness” (Q 2:183)”
Our campers learned, as Allah SWT mentions in this verse, that we fast in Ramadan in order to learn or achieve piety or “TAQWAH”. We learned about the importance of self-control and self-discipline in order to move the human-being from a devouring desire-indulgent carnal being to one who has patience, self-restraint, empathy, and gives to those in need. We spoke about the gluttony of society and the importance of being a Muslim in these difficult times of trials, temptations, and tribulations. Insha’Allah I will continue to update you from time to time on the activity and progress of our 2nd Annual Andalusia Islamic Summer Camp.
