Assalamu alaikum,
First and foremost, I give thanks to Allah for blessing me and my colleagues for making us part of Andalusia for yet another year! My nine years at Andalusia have been so rich with positive experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Many of my students are now a permanent fixture in my life, and they have made all my efforts worthwhile. I look forward to sharing their happy moments and achievements for years to come.
Going forward, we need to expand on the Andalusia experience by sharing knowledge with one another, and by realizing that teaching and learning go hand in hand. I have not only taught many of my students about literature and life, but I have also learned from them so much. This teacher/student partnership is the kind of partnership that we should all embrace and cherish with our hearts and minds. Teaching is not easy, it is a difficult job, but it is also a sacred job and a privilege that my colleagues and I in high school will never take for granted.
I urge each and every one of my students to be a teacher. That does not necessarily mean that you have to undertake teaching as a career. Teaching is the ultimate gift you can give a person. It is priceless and it is endless. And most of all it is a sign of love. You can all be teachers in all spheres of life. As fathers and mothers, as professionals and business people, and most importantly as community members and activists–we must all be teachers in our life roles. Teaching is a sacred responsibility, it is an “amana”, and it is a lifelong obligation and an ongoing process.
There is an old adage that reminds us that a good teacher is like a candle–it consumes itself to light the way for others. As much as I am humbled by this expression of sweet sacrifice, my experience as a teacher is that teaching at Andalusia has heightened my energy level every year. I am more motivated and feel more positive than ever!
To my fellow teachers: please remember that you are molding the next generation of leaders. Do not underestimate the permanent effect you have on your students. And keep in mind that who you are is more important than what you teach. As William Arthur Ward said so eloquently: the mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior teacher demonstrates. However, the GREAT teacher inspires. I need you all to be nothing less than great! Don’t forget that what a teacher writes on the blackboard of life can never be erased.
May Allah guide us and help us to continue on this blessed path of teaching and learning at Andalusia School for His sake and in His name, Insha’Allah.
JAK,

HIGH SCHOOL CONDUCT CONTRACT
Dear Parents and Students,
All high school students and parents are required to sign and return the “High School Code of Discipline and Conduct Contract” and the failing policy. By abiding by this contract, we can all ensure that Andalusia School is a place for learning and growth, free of any distractions and disruptions.
ANDALUSIA HIGH SCHOOL CODE OF DISCIPLINE AND CONDUCT CONTRACT
I hereby agree to be on my best Islamic behavior at all times. I promise to be on my best behavior during assembly. I promise to clean up after lunch. I promise to push in my chair after lunch and after each class. I promise to be on my best behavior during salah because it is part of my IMAN to stay quiet in the masjid and to comply with the rules of the masjid. I understand that I must behave during dismissal because there are younger kids in the gym during that time. I promise to come to school on time and attend all of my classes in a timely manner. I promise to be on my best behavior in the hallways because there are other classes in session. I promise to treat my fellow classmates with the utmost respect. I promise not to belittle, make fun of, bully, fight, or even “play flight” with others. I promise not to curse. I promise not to gossip about any of my classmates or abuse their trust. I promise not to slander anyone in school because it is very haram. I understand that I must dress appropriately and abide by the “School Dress Code.” I also intend to treat the principal, my teachers, staff, administrators, and fellow classmates with the utmost respect. I fully understand that I cannot have my cell phone in school. I will hand in my phone if I bring it to school until the day is over. I understand that if I do not comply with these rules, I will be reprimanded accordingly. I also agree to take my academic responsibilities seriously and do my best in all of my classes. I will make it a point to achieve the highest grades possible to the best of my ability. I promise not to fail any of my classes because I know that my parents have signed an agreement to send me to summer school if I do. I hope, Insha’Allah, to make my stay at Andalusia School productive and enjoyable.

ANDALUSIA HIGH SCHOOL FAILING STUDENT POLICY
A failing grade is either a letter grade “F” or a percent score less than 65% or a GPA less than 2.00 or its equivalent.
Failing students must retake failed subjects during the summer at locations designated by the Yonkers Board of Ed. or other institutions approved by School Administration. Proof of satisfactory completion is required for promotion to next grade level. If the failing student fails more subjects than the maximum allowed to be retaken by the designated institution then the remaining subject(s) must be taken the following summer.
If a student fails a course that is not offered at Yonkers High School or the designated institution, then the student will need to make up the work under an in-house guided self-study track and pass a final exam for that subject during the course of the following school year. No in-house self-study tracks will be offered for summer courses offered by YPS. The make-up syllabus and final exam will be administered by the current subject teacher or designated replacement if the original subject teacher is no longer employed by Andalusia. Students who fail to take the make-up course or do not pass the final exam will not be promoted to the next grade level.
Admitting failing students into the next grade level pending successful completion of failed subject courses is not a guarantee of grade promotion. Students who fail to pass these courses will result in grade demotion or holding back subsequent grade promotions. Student may either be demoted to previous grade level or held back in current grade level the following school year at the discretion of the Instructional Leader and approved by the principal.
Approved enrollment applications and/or tuition contracts and/or physical attendance of the subsequent grade-level classes are not to be construed as proof of academic promotion or of successful completion of the previous grade-level. All enrollment applications, including EZ Reg, and any other indications of promotion are conditional upon final academic approval by school administration.
New students who enroll at Andalusia School under academic probation need to maintain a passing grade in all subjects during the probationary period or face expulsion due to probationary violation. New students who enroll at Andalusia School under academic probation and fail one or more subjects will be denied re-enrollment for the following school year.
